Obituary for Robert W. Smith

Robert W. Smith, Sr. 92, a fifteen-year resident of Garden Spot Village in New Holland, Pennsylvania, passed away on December 26, 2022. He moved to Garden Spot from Ridley Park, Pennsylvania and was a longstanding member of Faith Community Church in Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, having worked for over thirty years at Scott Paper Company and serving as an officer for over twenty years with Gideon International.
He was born on July 21,1930 to William and Ethel Smith of Holmes, Pennsylvania and Smiths’ Bird Shop. He is predeceased by his sister, Margaret “Peg” Spangler and his brother, William C. Smith. He is also predeceased by his wife, Eleanor “Pidge” Brown of Ridley High, and his beloved daughter, Robin, of Elwyn, Pennsylvania. Surviving him are his three sons Robert of California, Richard of Iowa, and Ronald of Oregon, and twelve grandchildren, twelve greatgrandchildren, and one great-great grandson. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jean Smith, of Norwood, Pennsylvania, also a member of Faith Community Church.
Robert served in the Navy, worked at Baldwin Locomotive before Scott Paper, and attended college at night, ultimately receiving his B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Widener University.
He had many special friends at Garden Spot Village, including a close knit men’s group. The community was truly part of his life and he had a unique bond with a number of people who lived there. Most of all, his faith was important to him and he attempted to live that out in his “cheerful hellos” and support of others in need. His favorite verse was II Corinthians 5:17 (…”the old is passed away, the new has come.”)
Interment will be private in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Groff High Funeral Homes of New Holland is entrusted with the funeral arrangements.
