Bernard Marshall, 103, a resident of Garden Spot Village, New Holland, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019.
He was born in Dugspur, VA on March 12, 1916. His parents Walter and Grace Sutphin Marshall had 9 children. All are deceased except for the “baby” Ruthie Marshall Oliveira who still lives in the family house in the Blue Ridge Mountains. When he was 16, his family moved to Chester County, PA where he later met and married his wife of 62 years, Gladys Fichtner Marshall of Chester County. They had 3 girls: Mary Lynn Marshall Mathieu of Casselberry, FL; Barbara Ann Marshall Arent of Hayward, CA; and Carol Louise Marshall Ingram of Quarryville, PA. Bernie had 3 grandchildren: Beverly Lynn Mathieu of FL, Jeffrey Franklin Ingram—deceased, and Jacques Lee Arent of CA. Bernie has numerous nieces and nephews—all of whom he loved and considered his extended family.
Bernie worked in the milk industry for decades first at Nelson’s Dairies in Norristown, PA and later at Abbott’s in Philadelphia. In his later years, he served as a consultant for small businesses and churches.
When asked on his 103rdbirthday if he “felt like an old man of 103," Bernie shook his head “no” and went to sleep. Sweet dreams.
