Obituary for Albert M. Best
Albert Marlin Best, 99, was born September 20, 1919 at Knox, PA. He was the son of George and Ada Master Best. He died June 26, 2019 at the Willow Valley Communities, Lancaster PA
He graduated from Emlenton High School in 1937 and worked his way through Pennsylvania State University, graduating in 1942 with a B.S. in Agricultural Engineering.
He married F. Jane Evans of New Holland on June 15, 1946. Their family includes David and Janet Best, Spencerport, NY; Barbara and Paul Ruskin, State College PA; Nancy and Gary Bennett, Lancaster, PA; Susan Best and Francis Talarowski, Philadelphia PA; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. His sister, Hazel Fleming, died in 1977.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, New Holland; serving on numerous committees. He was also an associate member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Lancaster PA.
He began a forty- year career with New Holland Machine Company, retiring in 1982 as Director of Worldwide Engineering Research from Sperry, New Holland. He held 28 patents in farm equipment when he retired.
He was an active member of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers since 1942. As president from 1979-1980, he led 15 ASAE members to China for a 21-day trip at the invitation of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Machinery. He served eight years on the Agricultural Advisory Council to the Dean of Agriculture at PSU. He was a member of two honorary fraternities and listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in Engineering.
He served his community as a president of the Kiwanis Club in 1954; and was treasurer of the New Holland School Board during its transition to Eastern Lancaster County School District. He was also served on the New Holland Borough Water and Sewer Authority 1972-1994, chairing from 1982-1993.
He enjoyed outdoor activities and owned and operated a Christmas tree farm, selling trees to local and regional clubs. His passion was woodworking and he made over sixty pieces of furniture for his family, including 29 Windsor chairs and nine tall case clock cases. Each clock had a unique movement and painted dial.
He was kind and fair; and his droll sense of humor was enjoyed by those who knew him well. He was a gentleman.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 6th, at 9:30 am at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 El Main St., New Holland with the Rev. Dr. Charles H. Oberkehr officiating. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from 9-9:30 am.
